I was fortunate to be chosen to be a part of the launch team for Tricia Mingerink’s book, Deny. Of course, I was thrilled. Having participated with the launch of her first book, Dare, I was champing at the bit (excuse the horse-referenced idiom… I’m still a bit stuck in the land of Acktar) for the chance to find out what happens next in this very powerful series.
The book begins with a now-redeemed Leith Torren appointed First Blade by the loathsome King Respen. Surrounded by assassins that would slit his throat in an instant, Leith must hide his newfound faith. Each word he speaks must be carefully calculated. Each step he takes must be meticulously made or the people he loves will die. Renna. Despite his change of heart, he doubts he could ever become a man worthy of her, and yet… he dares to hope. And Brandi, Renna’s little sister. He loves her like his own. Her innocence and liveliness spark happiness in him. Yes, they had saved him. And now it is up to him to save them. He must use his position of power to gain information and report back to the Resistance. Yet while doing so, he must stay one step head of King Respen and the Blades. Will Leith be able to keep up with these lies? And to what extent will he go to in order to protect the sisters he has grown to love?
I will say again that I’m not typically the type to read fantasy, but this series has captivated me. The characters have come alive in ways that have made them so real to me. Their struggles, though in a different time period, are not much different than those we face as Christians in today’s society.
Issues like self-doubt and anxiety plague our heroine, Renna Faythe. At times, she questions God’s purpose and wonders if He’s really in control. These are issues I think we can all identify with… these are all places we’ve all been.
And Leith Torren. I absolutely love him in this book. He’s such a complicated, beautiful character, and it’s obvious, despite his past sins, how much he has grown in his faith. This time, it is he who gives Renna the hope that bandages her wounded soul.
Despite the treacherous times, their love for one another blossoms, both sweet and innocent yet fierce and strong.
Sweet, like tiny bits of unexpected chocolate, I simply adore their little moments that are sprinkled throughout the book. I remember reading each one and thinking, “Please don’t let this be the last time they see each other.” As a reader, you root for them. You want them to team up against Respen and overthrow him. You want to see the two of them get their happily ever after. However, you’re not going to get that just yet. No… instead you’ll get an incredible adventure that will undoubtedly get your heart pounding and lead up to a plot twist that will leave you breathless.
If you like romance, adventure, and adversity, then this book is for you. As for me, I keep rereading the last chapter and asking myself, “Now when is the next book coming out again?”
